DAFNI is a voluntary scheme of island communities aiming to promote a sustainable future, through concerted action. Every member of the network is committed to achieving a number of concrete targets, which are subject to external certification. Currently 29 islands and the two Regions of the Aegean Sea are members of the network (DAFNI-Non Profit Organisation) aiming towards:
- A balance of economic growth with environmental standards and social concerns
- Regional development through qualitative tourism, social participation and innovativestructures (including e-governance)
- New energy and water management schemes (including renewables and desalination)
The Aegean Sea comprises 90 inhabited islands, the majority of which have an inestimable ecological and archaeological value. Nevertheless, the present model of development (massive tourism, extensive construction, abandonment of agriculture etc.) combined with the scarcity of resources (energy, water, human capital) is seriously threatening their fragile ecosystems and social cohesion.
Currently, 15 Greek islands and 2 regional authorities members of the Dafni network have joined the Pact of Islands, a European islands' scheme for cooperation in sustainable energy planning and a political commitment of European islands to developing Sustainable Energy Action Plans and identifying bankable energy projects with the aim of meeting or exceeding the EU sustainability targets for the year 2020.
DAFNI, the Network of Sustainable Greek Islands and the Aegean Energy Agency are the Supporting Structures for the Aegean authorities, assisting them to fulfill their commitments.
29 insular municipalities and the regionsof the Aegean Sea are members of the network: Aegina, Alonissos, Amorgos, Andros, Chios, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kos, Kythnos, Lipsi, Lesbos, Limnos, Mykonos, Milos, Naxos and small cyclades, Nissyros, Paros, Patmos, Region of south aegean islands, Region of north aegean islands, Rhodes, Samothraki, Skyros, Syros, Sifnos, Skopelos, Thira, Tilos, Folegandros, Ydra.
