Smart Grids and Islands of Europe

Great success and high participation from all stakeholders in the two-day international conference "Smart Grids and Islands of Europe" that was organized by the Network of Sustainable Aegean Islands (DAFNI) on 15 & 16 May 2014 in Athens, in cooperation with the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR), the scientific coordination of the Ios-Aegean Energy Agency, and the support of the Representation of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Greece. The conference was hosted at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport & Networks, Anastaseos 2 & Tsigante str., Papagos, Athens.

It was a high level meeting for grid distribution specialists, electricity utilities, regulators, technology providers, renewable energy companies, consultants, educational & research institutions, local authorities and especially island authorities and stakeholders and active electricity users.

Key note speaker was Dominique Ristori, Director General Energy of the European Commission. The core of the conference also included speeches on the plan for smart grids in Greece by HEDNO, the smart grids project in 5 Aegean islands under development by the Network of Sustainable Aegean Islands (DAFNI), as well as on smart grid applications that are being implemented in islands in Scotland, Sweden and Denmark. Last but not least, the draft regulatory framework for charging stations of electric vehicles and the technologies available were also presented.

The international conference was addressed to the scientific and technical community, central administration, local authorities & especially island authorities (local and regional) and stakeholders, industry, media and finally citizens and consumers, who will have the opportunity to get firsthand an overview of the new possibilities and energy management approach offered by smart grids technology, and get an idea of the range of applications, products and opportunities with benefits for the consumer that can come out of this evolving market.

Welcome speeches were delivered by Asimakis Papageorgiou, Vice Minister of Environment, Energy & Climate Change, Giannis Ioannidis, General Secretary of Ministry of Interior, Arthouros Zervos, President and CEO of PPC S.A., Giorgos Kollias, President and CEO of HEDNO S.A., Eleni Marianou, Secretary General of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions (CPMR) and Nicole Katsioulis, Director of the Representation of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in Greece.

The conference was sponsored by HEDNO, Siemens, Rokas Renewables, ETVA VÉ.PE, SMA and PPC.
