Strategic Cooperation of European Islands
Islands from all over Europe share experiences with the aim to improve multilevel cooperation and support the implementation of sustainable energy projects of local importance that derive from their sustainable energy plans.
THE PACT OF ISLANDS ADOPTED BY THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

The Written Declaration on the establishment of the Pact of Islands as an official European Union initiative has been adopted by the European Parliament on the 19th of January 2012 with 388 signatures.

Building up smart grid infrastructure in 5 autonomous islands of the Aegean Sea - Greece
Through the Technical Assistance from the ELENA programme, DG ENER / Covenant of Mayors/European Investment Bank (EIB)
The start up of a very innovative programme under the name ISLE-SMART was announced in a press conference in Athens (Greece) on 24/11/2011 with the presence of the Vice President of EIB Mr. Plutarchos Sakellaris and the Minister of Interior, Greece Mr. Paris Koukoulopoulos.
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY AND EUROPEAN ISLANDS: The Pact of Islands and the ISLE-PACT project
THE PACT OF ISLANDS
15 Greek islands and 2 regional authorities from the Aegean area have joined the Pact of Islands, a European islands' scheme for cooperation in sustainable energy planning
and a political commitment of European islands to developing Sustainable Energy Action Plans and identifying bankable energy projects with the aim of meeting or exceeding the EU sustainability targets for the year 2020.
ELENA Technical Assistance awarded to DAFNI network - for preparing a project for Smart Grids in 5 Aegean Islands

A Technical Assistance grant from the ELENA facility was awarded to the DAFNI Network of Sustainable Aegean islands. The facility is managed by European Investment Bank, while the funding comes from the European Commission (DG ENERGY). The title of the proposed project is: Development of smart-grid infrastructure in 5 autonomous island grids of the Aegean Sea in Greece.
The Technical Assistance will be used for the development of technical studies and the support/preparation/finalisation of the procedures (legal, financing, call for tenders) for the installation of smart grids infrastructure in 5 islands, namely Lesvos, Limnos, Milos, Kythnos and Santorini (in total 150.000 inhabitants).

Covenant of Mayors
The Covenant of Mayors is a vast European movement involving local and regional authorities in the fight against climate change. It is an initiative based on a voluntary commitment by signatories to meet and exceed the EU 20% CO2 reduction objective through the development and implementation of Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs).
